About the Spotted Thick-knee

The Spotted Thick-knee (also called the Spotted Dikkop) is a large wader found across sub-Saharan Africa, known for its distinctive thick "knees" (actually ankle joints), enormous yellow eyes adapted for nocturnal activity, and cryptic plumage covered in spots and streaks that provide excellent camouflage against rocky and sandy ground. These fascinating birds are primarily nocturnal, spending their days crouched motionless on the ground where their camouflage makes them nearly invisible, then becoming active at dusk with their loud, eerie wailing calls that echo across the African landscape. Spotted Thick-knees are ground nesters who rely on their camouflage rather than flight to avoid predators, they have a distinctive upright posture when alert, and their large eyes and crepuscular habits make them a special sighting for birders exploring African habitats at dawn or dusk.
