About the Spotted Thick-knee

The Spotted Thick-knee (also known as the Spotted Dikkop) is a large, ground-dwelling shorebird found across sub-Saharan Africa and parts of the Middle East, known for its distinctive large yellow eyes, spotted plumage, and characteristically grumpy expression. These nocturnal birds are most active at dusk and dawn, spending their days hunkered down in a perpetual state that looks like they're judging everyone and everything around them. Spotted Thick-knees are named for their enlarged "knee" joints (which are actually ankle joints), and they're known for their loud, wailing calls that echo across African savannas at night, their reluctance to fly (preferring to walk or run from danger), and their ability to freeze motionless when threatened, all while maintaining that signature look of profound displeasure with the world.
