What's in the Bag? Essentials for Every Bird Watching Adventure

Birdwatching Tips

Whether you're embarking on a spontaneous road trip, taking a casual nature walk, or simply driving around town, having a well-equipped bird watcher's "go" bag or bags can elevate your birding experience to new heights. From field guides to snacks, here's a breakdown of the essential contents for your bird watching bag, tailored for various types of adventures.

  1. Binoculars: No bird watching excursion is complete without a quality pair of binoculars. Choose a pair that's compact, lightweight, and offers a good field of view and remember to bring lens cloths. Binoculars will help you get up close and personal with feathered friends from a distance. We keep small, inexpensive pairs in our glove compartments and in the panniers on our motorcycles because sometimes you aren't intending to go birding..., right.. We bring nicer pairs with us on camping trips and bird watching jaunts.
  2. Field Guide: A comprehensive field guide specific to the bird species in your region is a must. Look for one with clear illustrations, descriptions, and distribution maps. This handy tool will aid in identifying the birds you encounter on your journey. You can go analog or use your smart phone, there are plenty of great apps. Pick whatever type you can use most efficiently.
  3. Notebook and Pen: Keep a dedicated notebook and pen to jot down your observations, notes, and sketches. Documenting your sightings and thoughts can enhance your birding experience and create lasting memories. Here too, you can go analog or use your smart phone for notes, but there is something deeply satisfying about pen and paper.
  4. Smartphone or Camera: Capture stunning moments with a smartphone or camera equipped with a decent zoom lens. Use it to photograph birds and their habitats, as well as to document any unique behaviors you come across.
  5. Snacks and Water: Staying hydrated and energized is crucial, especially during longer or more active trips. Pack a reusable water bottle and some healthy snacks to keep you fueled and focused throughout the day. Pack out what you bring.
  6. Sun Protection: Bird watching often involves spending extended periods outdoors. Shield yourself from the sun's rays by including essentials like sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.  We are particular fans of sun screen sticks.  They look like mini deodorant applicators and they are less greasy and easier to apply. Important for keeping your binoculars and everything else free of sunscreen smudges.

  7. Insect Repellent: Depending on the location and time of year, insects can be a nuisance. Carry a small bottle of insect repellent to ward off any unwanted visitors.
  8. Maps and GPS: For road trips or more adventurous outings, bring along a map or use GPS or smartphone navigation to explore new birding locations. Having directions at your fingertips ensures you won't miss out on any hidden birding gems.
  9. First Aid Kit: Safety first! Include a basic first aid kit with essentials like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers in case of any minor mishaps.
  10. Portable Seating: Especially for longer bird watching sessions, consider packing a foldable camping chair or cushion to ensure you're comfortable as you wait for the perfect birding moment.
  11. Field Journal or Sketchbook: If you're artistically inclined, carry a field journal or sketchbook to create detailed drawings or paintings of the birds you encounter. This is a level up from just a basic pen and notebook and there are lots of great options to choose from that include both an area for observation notes and space to sketch.
  12. Spare Batteries and Chargers: Ensure your devices stay powered by packing spare batteries and portable chargers for your camera and smartphone. This is especially important if you are using your smartphone as the multipurpose tool it truly is.  Can we start calling them tricorders yet?

Remember, the key is to strike a balance between being well-prepared and traveling light. Tailor your bird watcher's "go" bag to suit the specific needs of your adventure, whether it's a short walk, a road trip, or a day spent exploring new habitats. With the right gear at your side, you'll be ready to embrace the beauty and wonder of the avian world wherever your journey takes you.
