Heist Coo - Part 4 - Stan

Fiction and Fun

Illustrations of show pigeons, each in their own colored circle.

In the bustling metropolis of Aviaro, where the skyline shimmered with the iridescent wings of a thousand pigeons, Stan stood tall among them all. Revered for his robust stature, his magnificently puffed chest, and his absolute unwillingness to back down from anything, Stan the Pouter Pigeon held a crucial role in the city's most audacious crew of avian thieves: Heist Coo.

Stan the Pouter Pigeon, enforcer and muscle of the Heist Coo crew, chest puffed with quiet menace.

The Crew

Cliff, the sophisticated English Carrier Pigeon, orchestrated the crew's communications with the precision of a seasoned general; calm, methodical, always three moves ahead.

Tumbles, the agile tumbler pigeon, navigated narrow spaces and secured locations with unmatched acrobatics, slipping in and out of places most birds couldn't dream of entering.

Fannie, the captivating Fantail show pigeon, was the crew's distraction artist; her performances so mesmerizing that entire rooms forgot what they were supposed to be doing.

And then there was Stan. Stan didn't need to say much. Stan just needed to show up.

The Target: The Aviaro Diamond

Their latest heist was the most ambitious yet. The Aviaro Diamond — a legendary jewel of extraordinary size and rumored mystical properties — was to be displayed at the city's most prestigious annual gala. Whispered about in every back-alley roost from the docks to the cathedral spires, the diamond was said to grant its possessor immense influence over birds. Whether that was true or not, their client was paying enough that none of them felt the need to ask too many questions.

The gala was held in the Grand Aviaro Hall, a cavernous, chandelier-lit venue packed with the city's wealthiest and most well-heeled elite. Security was tight. The diamond sat ridiculously unprotected on a pedestal, on a dias, surrounded by security rope, at the center of the main hall, bathed in a single spotlight, surrounded by guards who looked like they took their jobs very seriously.

The Plan

Cliff spent three days gathering intelligence, tapping into Aviaro's legendary sparrow communication network — a web of gossipy, fast-talking birds who knew everything happening in every corner of the city. By the time the gala arrived, Cliff had a floor plan, a guard rotation schedule, and a very detailed understanding of which security guards were easily distracted by sunflower seeds.

Tumbles would infiltrate via the rafters, work his way to the display case, and retrieve the diamond. Fannie would position herself near the entrance, ready to deploy her performance at a moment's notice. Stan would wait in the wings — the last resort, the insurance policy, the thing that went bump in the night if everything else went sideways.

The Complication

For the first twelve minutes, everything went perfectly. Then Tumbles was spotted.

A sharp-eyed security guard glanced up at exactly the wrong moment and caught a glimpse of a small, acrobatic pigeon doing something extremely suspicious in the rafters above the diamond display. An alarm was raised. Security measures intensified, which mainly consisted of a large number of guards staring up at the ceiling with flashlights and walkie-talkies, while Tumbles pressed himself flat against a beam and tried to look like architectural detail.

He was cornered. The window to the diamond was closing fast.

Stan's Moment

Cliff's coded message reached Stan in under four seconds: "We need the big show. Now."

Stan cracked his neck, puffed his already considerable chest to its full and frankly intimidating circumference, and turned to Fannie. "You ready?"

Fannie spread her magnificent tail feathers. "I was born ready."

They walked into the Grand Aviaro Hall together, and the room shifted. Fannie launched into the performance of her career, her tail fanning and spinning in a display so breathtaking that guests abandoned their conversations mid-sentence to stare. Meanwhile, Stan moved through the crowd with the slow, deliberate confidence of a pigeon who has never once considered the possibility that he might not be the most important bird in any given room. He positioned himself directly in front of the head of security, puffed up to maximum capacity, and simply stared.

The head of security, a large and normally unflappable man named Gerald, found that he could not, in fact, maintain eye contact with Stan. He looked away. He looked back. Stan had not moved. Gerald suddenly remembered he needed to check on something near the entrance.

The guards starting at the ceiling drifted toward the commotion. The spotlight on the diamond flickered as the crowd surged toward Fannie's performance.

The Escape

In the chaos, Tumbles moved. Three seconds of pure, silent acrobatics.  The diamond disappeared into a small harness strapped beneath Tumbles' wing.

By the time the applause for Fannie died down and Gerald had collected himself enough to look back at the display pedestal, the Aviaro Diamond was already three blocks away, tucked safely in Cliff's satchel at the rendezvous point.

Their successful heist was a testament to Stan's decisive action and quiet menace, Cliff's strategic brilliance, Tumbles' unmatched agility, and Fannie's once-in-a-generation distraction. But if you asked Stan, he'd tell you it was mostly him.

He wouldn't be entirely wrong.

The Heist Coo crew will return.
