3 Birding Apps We Love

Birdwatching Tips

Bluebird in a cedar tree.

If there is one thing we at Bird Fluff love about birds, it is that they come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. If you stop to pay attention, they are everywhere. But what do you do when you spot a bird you have never seen before? If you are like us, you stop everything, conversation, walking, thinking, to commit that bird to memory. Or you pull out your phone and open your favorite birding app.

Yes, favorite birding app. Implying there is more than one. Let's just say there are enough bird apps on my phone to justify their own folder. Of the five I have installed, I turn to three of them most often and for very different reasons.

Why Use a Birding App?

Birding apps have transformed the hobby. Whether you're a beginner trying to name your first backyard visitor or a seasoned lister chasing a rare sighting, the right app can help you identify birds by sight or sound, log your sightings, and contribute to real conservation science, all from your phone.

Audubon Bird Guide – Best for Field Identification

Screen shot of the Audubon app from a smart phone.

The Audubon Bird Guide app is the one I reach for most when I'm out on a walk or hike and need to identify a bird with confidence. It's completely free, easy to use, and available on all platforms.

Key features:

  • Detailed species profiles with high-quality photos and multiple angles
  • Recordings of calls and songs for hundreds of species
  • Range maps, habitat info, diet, nesting, and conservation status
  • Quick sighting logging from the home screen or within any bird profile
  • Your personal sighting stats displayed front and center

If you only download one birding app, make it this one.

eBird by The Cornell Lab of Ornithology – Best for Citizen Science

Screen shot of the ebird app from a smart phone.

eBird is less of an identification app and more of a citizen science platform. It's one of the most powerful tools in any birder's kit. Free on both iPhone and Android, it's the app I open when I'm sitting on a park bench, out for a birding walk, or watching the feeder from the back deck.

Key features:

  • Start a timed checklist and record every species and count you observe
  • Location-aware species suggestions based on what's likely in your area
  • Your data contributes to one of the largest biodiversity science projects in the world
  • Explore sighting data from other birders near you or anywhere on the globe

One note of caution: eBird takes data accuracy seriously. If you log a rare or unusual bird for your area, you may receive a friendly follow-up from one of their experts asking for more details. (Some of those sparrow/finch-sized birds are genuinely tricky to ID. You've been warned.)

Chirp! – Best for Learning Bird Songs

Screen shot of the Chirp! app from a smart phone.

Chirp!, developed by iSpiny, is all about your ears. Available on iPhone for US users, it's the app that taught me to recognize birds by sound, and it's become one of my favorites.

Key features:

  • Browse birds by region, sorted by how commonly they appear in your area
  • Tap any bird to hear its typical song and calls in high quality
  • Each species includes a photo and a brief description, with links to Cornell and Wikipedia
  • Simple, clean interface that's especially easy for kids to use

A word of caution: it's tempting to play bird calls and see what shows up, but avoid doing so during breeding season. Playing territorial calls can distract birds from the important work of raising young.

Not Sure Which App Is Right for You?

Try them all, most are free. If one doesn't click, delete it and move on. The best birding app is the one you'll actually use. Now lace up your walking shoes and get out there.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free birding app?

The Audubon Bird Guide is widely considered the best all-around free birding app for field identification. It offers detailed species profiles, range maps, photos, and call recordings at no cost. eBird is the top choice for logging sightings and contributing to citizen science.

Can an app identify birds by sound?

Yes. Chirp! is purpose-built for learning bird songs and calls. The Merlin Bird ID app by Cornell Lab also features Sound ID, which can identify birds in real time just by listening through your phone's microphone.

Are birding apps accurate?

Modern birding apps are remarkably accurate for common species, especially when you provide good photos or clear audio. Accuracy can decrease for rare species, juvenile birds, or birds in non-typical plumage; which is why apps like eBird have expert reviewers to verify unusual sightings.

Do birding apps work offline?

The Audubon Bird Guide and Chirp! both offer offline functionality once species data is downloaded. eBird requires a connection to submit checklists, though you can start a checklist offline and sync later.

How many birding apps do I need?

Honestly, two or three covers most situations. We recommend Audubon for identification, eBird for logging and citizen science, and Chirp! for ear training. Together they cover sight, sound, and science.
